This is done in order to supply the web search tool with the information it needs to provide relevant results. in order to do this, a very fast API call is made to ip-api.com this information is only as specific as the city or town you are currently in. As such, questions like, 'where is the closest petrol station' won't generate great results. 🔑 Setup in seconds To get started, you’ll need an OpenAI API key. ** when you download the the shortcut and add it to your device for the first time you will be prompted to set it up, at this point, enter your API key. Run it once manually inside the shortcuts app, to grant the necessary privacy permissions. New Bug: I'm aware of an issue where the HomePod responds by asking you to verify who you are, and then requires you to continue on your iPhone. at present I believe this is a bug related to the shortcut having only just been installed on your device. but if this is reliably happening to you after you've downloaded the shortcut and run it manually a few times, please get in touch. for whatever reason older iPhones and older HomePods seem to be most susceptible to this 🛏️ Why this shortcut exists I built this so I could ask questions late at night while lying in bed, without needing to reach for my phone or scroll through web results. It’s not perfect, but it works reliably enough to be a daily habit — and it turns your HomePod into the smart assistant it always should’ve been. Since working on the 2.0 update, and now that the API call can make use of a web search, I also have this shortcut in control centre, and its quickly becoming my default way to quickly query the web or get an short answer to a basic question. this is faster than opening the ChatGPT app or launching safari to do a google search *there is much more stuff that happens behind the scenes with each running of the shortcut, things like checking for an updated version of the shortcut, gathering some crude information about your location so chat GPT can give you relevant search results **if you're struggling with the API key set up, check out this step by step guide on YouTube after that, the shortcut is very easy to setup and use.
